Katie Graves Obituary

Katie H. Graves entered this world on June 22, 1924, to the late Formie and Cordie Hemingway in Britton’s Neck, SC. She grew up on Lovell’s Lane and was educated at Bethel School. At an early age, Katie gave her life to Christ and joined Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she faithfully served as a leader on the Usher Board, a member of the choir, and the People’s Benevolent Society. Her commitment to service also included membership in Britton’s Neck Hettie’s Chapter #314, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served for over 50 years.

Katie was employed at Southern Packing (Sopacko) in Mullins, SC, for over 25 years before retiring. After retirement, she volunteered with the summer feeding program and enjoyed selling candy and Watkins flavoring. In her spare time, she loved gardening, sitting on her porch, cooking Sunday meals, and spending time with her family.

On January 22, 2026, Katie transitioned peacefully at her residence, entering eternal rest with her Lord and Savior. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Van Graves; her eldest son, Jackie Van Graves; her granddaughter, Jamalyn Graves; and eight of her siblings.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Frankie Graves of Goldsboro, NC; James (Jane) Graves of Marion, SC; and Priscilla Graves of Gresham, SC; along with her daughter-in-law, Flora Graves of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by her sister, Reather M. Jones of Brooklyn, NY, and her devoted granddaughter, Beneshia Julious, of the home, who lovingly cared for and supported her.

Katie also leaves behind ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as special relatives and friends: her nephew, James “Jap” Moses; her niece, Bernice “Ann” Williams; Elease Graves, Ellen Simmons, Apostle Linda W. Richardson; April and David Connor; Jeanette Richardson; Mamie Robinson; Ta’Kesa Owens,Pat Selph Scarbor; and David Lovell. Additionally, Katie is fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends whose lives she greatly influenced.
